Theyyam An ancient art form, more than eight centuries old, Theyyam is one of the most spectacular of the ritual arts forms of Northern Kerala. Theyyam, believed to have been derived from the word Daivam, meaning god, is based on the belief that immortal spirits enter into mortal bodies to perform a ritual dance of divine revelation. Theyyams are staged in various temples of Malabar, usually in front of the village shrine, with regularity each year. As performances are on an "open stage" they can also be showcased in traditional Malabar households during festive or special occasions.
Paripally Gajamela Parippally Gajamela is part of the annual festival at the Kodimoottil Sree Bhagavathy Temple dedicated to Goddess Bhadrakali. The word gajamela in Malayalam literally means festival of elephants. Several cultural programmes are also arranged as part of the event on the temple premise. The get-together of the elephants takes place on the last day of the ten-day festival.
Camp at Rhodo Valley Trekking enthusiasts who enjoy sightseeing by walking around and staying outdoors can choose Rhoda Valley in Munnar. Thrissur pooram The world-renowned Thrissur pooram, arguably the most famous festival of Kerala, is held on the premises of the Vadakkumnatha temple, which is a classic example of Kerala style of architecture, is made spectacular by the pageant of 30 caparisoned elephants and kudamattom, a competition involving swift rhythmic changing of brightly coloured and sequined parasols. The festival is held towards the end of April every year.
Sabarimala The Lord Ayyappa Temple of Sabarimala, located in a forest in Pathanamthitta, is a hill shrine. The temple is situated on a hilltop at an altitude of 1535 ft. above sea level and is surrounded by mountains and dense forests. Vehicles going to Sabarimala are allowed only up to Pamba which is at a 5 kilometer distance from the temple. From here, visitors have to proceed by foot. The temple is open during the pilgrim season known as mandala kaalam which falls approximately between 14th November to 27th December every year, and makaravilakku which falls in mid January each year. During this time it is estimated that about 45-50 million devotees visit the shrine of Ayyappa.Strict traditional practices, rituals, preparations and dress codes are meant for those intending to visit Sabarimala. In preparation for their visit, pilgrims wear black rudraksha beads around their neck, dress in black or blue mundus/dhotis and abstain from the consumption of non-vegetarian food and alcohol. They also take a vow to celibacy for the 40 days prior to their pilgrimage. Women in the menstruating age group of 10 to 60 are not permitted to visit Sabarimala.
